Overview

The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act forges a dynamic relationship between the federal government and the state. The Act mandates gubernatorial appointments to the Juvenile Justice Advisory Board.

The Juvenile Justice Advisory Board is chaired by a private citizen appointed by the Governor.  The members of the board are appointed by the Governor with no fewer than 15 members and no more than 33 members.  A majority of the members cannot be full-time employees of any federal, state, or local government and at least one-fifth are under the age of twenty-four when appointed. 

Under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act of 2002 the State of Kentucky is awarded Title II Formula Grant funds though the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP).

The Kentucky Juvenile Justice Advisory Board (JJAB) is the advisory body recognized by Congress to establish priorities for OJJDP funding.

To receive funding, the JJAB must conduct an analysis of juvenile crime problems within the state and include the results of the analysis in the three year plan.
